Baseball Drops 4-3 Decision at Maryland
Apr 08 | Baseball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Rutgers baseball dropped another close game at Maryland, losing 4-3 on Saturday afternoon in College Park.
With the result, the Terrapins (19-11, 4-1) clinch the weekend series, while the Scarlet Knights (15-15, 1-4) will look to salvage the weekend on Sunday.
For the second straight game, RU was able to get out to a 2-0 advantage, but Maryland once again rallied to take the lead and the Scarlet Knights were unable to answer back.
Maximus Martin produced both early runs for Rutgers, leading off the third inning with a triple and scoring on a Jordan Sweeney sac fly. Martin struck again in the fifth, blasting his fourth home run of the season to left-center, making it 2-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Terps used a one-out single followed by a two-run home run to even the game at 2-2. A solo home run with two outs gave them a 3-2 lead.
The hosts added an insurance run in the eighth, which proved to be crucial. Down 4-2 in the ninth, Evan Sleight homered to dead center field on the first pitch to bring it to 4-3. Maryland would go to the bullpen, however, and retire the next three batters in order to finish the game.
Rutgers concludes its series at Maryland at 12 p.m. on Sunday, with the game set to be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
