Conover Selected by Oakland in MLB Draft
Jul 11 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Rutgers pitcher Drew Conover was selected by the Oakland Athletics with the 316th overall pick in the 11th round of the MLB Draft on Tuesday afternoon.
A native of Pittstown, New Jersey, Conover was named to the All-Big Ten Third Team in his first year on the Banks after transferring from Seton Hall. He served as a key member of the weekend rotation, pitching to a 5-4 record with a 4.50 ERA and leading the team with his 64.0 innings pitched and 79 strikeouts. He registered six quality starts and struck out seven or more batters in six of his starts as well.
"Drew has an electric arm with three swing-and-miss pitches," head coach Steve Owens said. "He continues to improve and we are all excited to watch him take his skills to the professional level. He has huge potential to be an impact pitcher."
Conover joins Ryan Lasko – who was also selected by Oakland (Rd 2, #41) – as Scarlet Knights taken in this year's MLB Draft. If they both sign, they would become the ninth and 10th Rutgers alumni in affiliated ball.
Conover's selection also involves familial significance. His father, Kevin Conover, was selected by the Chicago White Sox out of Rutgers with 641st overall pick in the 25th round of the 1989 MLB Draft. They are the first father-son duo in Rutgers baseball history to both be drafted.
