PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 14 Rutgers men's lacrosse will play its first road game of the season this weekend, travelling to Long Island to take on Stony Brook. The contest will see the first faceoff come at noon, with a stream available via Flo Sports.
Rutgers opened the season at 1-0, claiming a 14-12 win over a tough Lehigh squad in the season opener in front of 1,051 fans at SHI Stadium, the seventh largest crowd of opening weekend. The victory was the 12th consecutive season opening win under 13th year head coach Brian Brecht.
Shane Knobloch and Jack Aimone each had a hat trick, while Dante Kulas, Ross Scott and John Sidorski all had two goals. Kulas and Scott each had three assists for a team-high five points. Knobloch's two man-up goals are the early nation's lead.
Ross Scott, who was named to the USILA Team of the Week following his performance, is at 91 career goals, nine away from reaching 100 for his career. Scott and Shane Knobloch were each named Preseason All-Americans by multiple publications and were joined by Jack Aimone as Preseason Players to Watch by the Big Ten.
Overall, 17 of the 23 points for RU in the opener came from their top-four leading returning scorers from last season (Scott, Knobloch, Aimone, Kulas). They were supplemented by newcomers John Sidorski (Lehigh transfer, two goals and two assists) and Tanner Germain (Bucknell transfer, one goal), while sophomore long-stick midfielder Ryan Splaine notched his first career goal.
Overall, a new-look Rutgers' roster saw six players make their first start in a Rutgers' uniform. Offensively, Sidorski started at midfield, while Tanyr Krummenacher (Amherst) took a starting attack spot.
On the defensive end, RU saw three close defensemen making their first career start: Tommy Mendyke, Ben McKelvy and Connor Udovich. Udovich made his career debut, while Mendyke and McKelvy had combined for 25 games of action in their career between defense and LSM. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Cardin Stoller made 10 saves behind them in his collegiate debut, earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week accolades.
Two newcomers split time at the faceoff 'X' and had identical stats. Matt Soutar (Monmouth) and Cole Brams (Utah) both went 9-of-15 with six ground balls.
Also making their Rutgers' debuts were freshman midfielder Colin Kurdyla, transfer SSDMs Brandon Hund (Towson), Donnie Howard (BU) and Mason Edwards (UMBC), and midfielder Tim Sommer (Hamilton). Additionally, Zak Conley, originally a Binghamton transfer who saw action in just two games last season, saw his most extended RU playing time at LSM, and collected three ground balls and one caused turnovers.
Stony Brook opened the season with a road win, rallying from a 10-6 halftime deficit with an 11-4 second half scoring run for a 17-14 win at Sacred Heart. Three different Seawolves had three goals in the game, with Nick Dupuis (three goals, five assists) leading the way. Dupuis' eight points were the fourth most in the nation last week, while Jamison MacLahlan's 16 saves ranked third nationally. The team had the top shot percentage nationally at 0.459 and were third in assists per game (11).
Following the game, MacLachlan was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week, while Justin Bonacci (two goals, three GB, 1 CT) was named the CAA Rookie of the Week. Overall, Stony Brook had a league-high five Preseason all-conference selections, highlighted by Dylan Pallonetti, who was named the CAA Co-Offensive Player of the Year. A Preseason All-American by USA Lacrosse, Pallonetti has 124 goals in 45 collegiate games.
Head coach Anthony Gilardi enters his fifth season at the helm of the program. The team enters the second season in the CAA, picked to finish second in the preseason poll, after advancing to the CAA Tournament title game last year in their initial year as league members.
Rutgers and Stony Brook have previously met 14 times since 1994, with RU holding an 8-6 advantage. Rutgers has won three of the last four meetings, dating back to 2017, after snapping a four-game winning streak in the series for Stony Brook.
The teams will meet for the third straight season, with RU claiming wins in each of the last two years. Last season, the Seawolves came to SHI Stadium for the second game of the season, and Rutgers earned an 11-7 win. In that game, RU held a 7-3 lead at halftime and held on for the victory. Returners Ross Scott and Jack Aimone each had two goals in that game. In 2022, RU tripped to Long Island, and came hold with a 17-16 win in a wild affair. RU had a 17-12 lead with 10 minutes to play, and held off a late charge from the Seawolves, who scored the game's last four goals but were stifled in the final five minutes to be short by one goal. Ross Scott had four goals in that game and had two goals in the 2020 game as a true freshman. As such, Scott has scored eight games against the Seawolves in three career games.
RU is 62-52 all-time against teams from the CAA.
Rutgers returns home for a rivalry game on Saturday, February 17 at 1 p.m., hosting No. 6 Army. The game against the Black Knights represents the first of seven upcoming games against teams ranked No. 15 or better in this week's USILA Coaches Poll.
