PISCATAWAY, N.J. – In the 101
st meeting between the Rutgers and Princeton men's lacrosse teams, it was Princeton who raised the Meistrell Cup following a 14-8 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Rutgers had three players with multi-goal days, as each of their starting midfielders (
Shane Knobloch,
Jack Aimone and
Colin Kurdyla) scored two goals apiece. Princeton, however, led for the duration, leading in shots (44-38) and forcing RU into 21 turnovers.
Cardin Stoller made 16 saves for RU and
Cole Brams went 16-of-26 at the 'X'.
Ross Scott scored his 100
th career goal, becoming the 13th player in Rutgers' history to reach 100 career goals, tying Bob Kelly for 12th all-time.
Tanyr Krummenacher also scored.
Princeton jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first 12 minutes of action. RU had two quick strikes, with Knobloch and Aimone tallying just 27 seconds apart. Princeton expanded that lead to 5-2, before Rutgers again cut into the advantage at 5-4. Princeton responded with a 4-0 run to close the half, taking a 9-4 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Princeton pushed their lead as high as 13-5. Rutgers had a late push, scoring three of the final four goals over the final 14-plus minutes of the game, but the Tigers closed out the victory.
The loss snapped a three-game home winning streak over the Tigers for RU. It was the first time that the road team won the rivalry matchup since 2015.
The crowd of 3,482 was the largest attendance for a Rutgers-Princeton game at SHI Stadium, the ninth largest crowd for a RU home game since 2006, and the third largest crowd for a non-conference game since 2006.
Rutgers returned players from injury in the contest. After seeing 12 players not dressed due to injury in Tuesday's win over Detroit Mercy, that number was cut to seven for the game against the Tigers.
Colin Kelly made his Rutgers' debut, starting on attack.
Harris Hubbard, who saw his first action as a Scarlet Knight in the second half of the Detroit game, made his first start on defense.
Mason Edwards, who had not seen game action since the opening minute of the season opener, returned to action at short-stick defensive midfield.
Rutgers has its final non-conference game of the season next week. The Scarlet Knights will meet UMass at a neutral site on Saturday at 1 p.m. on Long Island. The game will be played at Weldon E. Howitt Middle School as part of the Dalers Lacrosse Classic presented by Shore 2 Shore Lacrosse. Following that game, RU returns to SHI Stadium for its first two Big Ten Conference games. Rutgers will host No. 4/2 Johns Hopkins on Sunday, March 24 at 4:30 pm.
