PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 19 Rutgers men's lacrosse will play UMass this weekend in the final non-conference game of the season. The matchup will take place at a neutral site in Long Island. The Dalers Lacrosse Classic will be at Weldon E. Howitt Middle School in Farmingdale, N.Y. The venue is 73 miles from Rutgers' home field and 182 miles from UMass.
Tickets are available online. There will also be a live stream, available for free on the Varsity Media YouTube page, with Dylan Butler and Brian Soper on the call. Rutgers enters the weekend in the top-10 nationally in man-up offense (sixth, 50%) and turnovers (ninth, 14.29). Shane Knobloch's four man-up goals are fourth in the country.
Ross Scott leads the team with 27 points and 16 assists. He recently scored his 100th goal last weekend, the 13th Scarlet Knight to reach the century mark in goals. He needs one more goal to pass Bob Kelly and take sole possession of 12th all-time at RU in goals.
Shane Knobloch has the team lead with 16 goals, while Jack Aimone closely trails him with 15.
Freshman midfielder Colin Kurdyla was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Tuesday, earning the accolade for the second straight week. Kurdyla is now up to third on the team with 11 goals.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Cardin Stoller has also won the Big Ten Freshman of the Week award twice this season. RU has claimed four of the six Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards thus far this season.
Stoller has a 10.54 goals-against-average and 53.6% save percentage following his season-high of 16 saves last game. On faceoffs, Cole Brams is 65-of-117 (55.6%).
Rutgers saw a return to health last week. Colin Kelly made his season debut as a starting attackman, Harris Hubbard made his debut and then got his first start at defense, and short-stick defensive midfielder Mason Edwards returned for the Princeton game for his first action since the season opener.
The Gorillas enter the matchup with a 4-2 record. The Gorillas were nationally ranked last week after a 4-1 start that saw a four-game winning streak following a one-goal loss to now-No. 1 Army in the opener, but a one-goal loss to Vermont last week dropped them into the receiving votes section.
Head coach Greg Cannella enters his 30th year at the helm, with a record of 249-172. UMass is sixth nationally in man-up defense (82.4%) and seventh in shot percentage (36.0%).
Mason Bregnman leads the team with 20 points (11 goals, nine assists). Caelin Lewis paces the squad with 12 goals, while Mike Tobin, a fifth-year who was all-Atlantic 10 last season, has 11 goals and five assists.
Goalkeeper Matt Knote, one of nine goalkeepers on the Tewaaraton Award Watch List and last year's national leader in save percentage, has a .561 save percentage and 9.88 goals-against-average. Caleb Hammett, a Preseason All-Conference selection, is 70-of-142 (49.2%) at the 'X'.
This will be the 30th matchup between the former ECAC rivals, and the second consecutive year matching up, with UMass leading 18-11 all-time. Last year's game was the first meeting since the 2009 ECAC Championship game, with the two teams playing 28 times between 1977 and 2009, then not for 14 seasons.
The 2023 matchup saw RU take the win over UMass, with seven different Scarlet Knights getting on the board for an 11-5 win. Dante Kulas led the attack with four points on two goals and two assists, while the defensive effort was led by Ethan Rall and Bobby Russo, who had three and two caused turnovers, respectively.
Rutgers has five players on the roster from Long Island: Nick Teresky (Wantagh – 7 miles from Farmingdale), James Ringer (Bayport – 25 Miles from Farmingdale), John Sidorski (East Islip – 16 Miles from Farmingdale) Tanner Germain (Huntington – 11 miles) and Shane Murphy (Long Beach – 22 Miles from Farmingdale).
Head coach Brian Brecht is a Long Island product, hailing from Farmingville, N.Y. and a 1991 graduate of Sachem High School.

Rutgers plays its next two games at home, with the matchup against the Blue Jays followed by a game against Ohio State on Saturday, March 30.
