Baseball Swept by Grand Canyon in Doubleheader

PHOENIX – Rutgers baseball was swept in Saturday's doubleheader against Grand Canyon, losing game one by a score of 10-3 and game two, 13-8. The Scarlet Knights (2-4) will look to salvage the four-game series against the Lopes (5-2) on Sunday afternoon in the finale.
 
Game 1 Recap
Grand Canyon got on the board in the first on an RBI single that dropped into center field. Rutgers had a quick response, with RJ Johnson Jr. singling home JT Thompson to tie things at 1-1.
 
Nick Tomasetto picked up an RBI single in the top of the third to give RU an early 2-1 advantage.
 
GCU would take the lead on a three-run homer in the third and added on with a single in the fourth to make it 5-2.
 
Tomasetto drove in another with an RBI groundout in the fifth, bringing it to 5-3.
 
Grand Canyon then scored five unanswered to close out the game, using a bases-loaded walk, RBI single and wild pitch in the fifth and a two-run homer in the sixth to go up 10-3.
 
Game 2 Recap
Ty Doucette got the Rutgers offense going with an RBI single in the first after Trevor Cohen led off the game with a double. Grand Canyon answered with a sac fly in the bottom half.
 
RU added two in the second on an RBI single from Pablo Santos and an error by the Lopes after a Cohen single. The Scarlet Knights held a 3-2 lead after two, with GCU scoring on another RBI single in the second.
 
The Rutgers bats hung a three-spot in the fourth thanks to an RBI single from Matt Chatelle, an error and an RBI single from Doucette. The Lopes once again answered with three in the bottom half, using a pair of RBI singles and an RBI groundout to bring the score to 6-5.
 
Johnson Jr. led off the eighth with a triple and scored on a sac fly from Matt Chatelle. Pablo Santos then hit his first career home run – a solo shot – making it 8-5.
 
Grand Canyon broke out for eight runs in the bottom of the eighth to take control of the contest and ultimately win by a score of 13-8. 
 
The series finale is set for Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET.
