Baseball Walked Off in Game Two at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – Rutgers baseball dropped game two of its series to Coastal Carolina, losing by a score of 6-5 on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the Scarlet Knights (4-6) leading for the majority of the contest, the Chanticleers (9-2) walked it off in the ninth inning thanks to a pair of solo home runs.

RU struck first in the top of the first, with Ty Doucette sending out his first home run of the season to right field, giving his team a 1-0 lead. CCU answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half, taking a 2-1 lead after one.

Brennan Hyde led off the top of the second with a double and two batters later, RJ Johnson Jr. followed with a double of his own to score Hyde and make it 2-2.

Landon Mack settled in after the first and posted scoreless second and third innings and retired eight Chanticleers in a row at one point.

In the top of the fourth, the Scarlet Knights put a pair of runners on to begin the frame. Pablo Santos laid down a sac bunt to put them on second and third. JD Jones then lined a single into right field, bringing home Trevor Cohen and Johnson Jr. and making it 4-2.

After getting the first out of the fourth, Mack walked a pair and was relieved by Luke Fithian. With the bases loaded, Fithian induced a grounder to third and Santos dove to tag third and made the throw to first for the inning-ending double play.

Doucette hit his second home run of the game in the seventh, a solo shot that gave the Scarlet Knights a 5-2 advantage. A single and walk put two on for CCU in the bottom half and then an RBI single and sac fly got back a pair of runs to make it 5-4.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Chanticleers hit a leadoff home run to tie the game and a solo home run two batters later to walk it off and clinch the series.

Eight of the nine RU starters collected a hit in the game, with Trevor Cohen, Doucette and Jones all recording two hits.

The series finale between Rutgers and Coastal Carolina is set for 11 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Notes

  • Peyton Bonds and Ty Doucette both extended their on-base streaks to all 10 games this season: Bonds on a seventh-inning single and Doucette on a first-inning home run.
