Baseball Beats Wagner Behind Big 5th Inning

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball won its midweek contest over Wagner by a score of 9-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Bainton Field. The Scarlet Knights (8-9) used a nine-run fifth inning to take control and beat the Seahawks (6-8) for their second win in as many days.

Jordan Falco started strong with three scoreless innings on the mound. Wagner then struck for three runs in the top of the fourth. The first run came on a sac fly with the bases loaded before a pair of two-out singles each scored a run to make it 3-0.

Preston Prince came in and got the last out of the inning to settle things down. After the Seahawks loaded the bases in the fifth, Dillon Ryan entered to get the final out on a strikeout. Ryan threw a scoreless sixth as well to keep the visitors at bay.

The Scarlet Knights finally broke through in the fifth, posting nine runs to flip the game and take control. RU loaded the bases and scored its first run of the game on a wild pitch. In his first game since February, Yomar Carreras provided the first big hit of the day, grounding a single into right to make it 3-2.

Peyton Bonds rolled a grounder to third, but an error kept the inning alive and tied the game at 3-3.

Ty Doucette followed with a three-run home run to break the game open – his second in an many days and team-best fourth of the season. Pablo Santos doubled in one more and JT Thompson reached on an error that plated the eighth and ninth runs of the inning – seven of which came with two outs – giving Rutgers a 9-3 lead.

With RU owning a six-run lead, true freshman Hunter Hoxie pitched a scoreless sixth with a pair of strikeouts. Hoxie collected another strikeout in a 1-2-3 eighth.

Tyler Kane made his collegiate debut in the top of the ninth and recorded the first out of the frame. Connor Grotyohann relieved him and struck out the final two batters to close out the win.

Rutgers is back in action this weekend with a three-game series against Cal Baptist, starting at 4 p.m. on Friday.
