PISCATAWAY, N.J. – After a dominant outing against No. 9 Oregon, freshman RHP Landon Mack has been named both Big Ten Pitcher of the Week and Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. The honors mark the first of Mack's career and the first weekly awards earned by a Scarlet Knight this season.
Mack earned the accolades following his seven shutout innings on Saturday, leading Rutgers to an 8-0 victory on the road at PK Park in Eugene. The true freshman held the Ducks, who entered the weekend ranked ninth nationally in scoring, to just two hits while walking none and striking out four over a career-high seven innings. He faced 23 batters, retiring 18 consecutive hitters at one point and needing only 85 pitches to complete his outing.
The performance marked Mack's second straight scoreless outing, following six shutout innings in a win over Cal Baptist the previous week. Mack has now tossed 13.1 consecutive scoreless innings, dating back to March 8 against Iowa.
With the victory, Mack improved to 2-2 on the season and lowered his ERA to 2.86, which leads all Big Ten freshmen. He has pitched 28.1 innings this season, allowing just nine earned runs while issuing only eight walks and holding opponents to a .220 batting average.
Mack becomes the first Scarlet Knight to sweep both Pitcher and Freshman of the Week honors since Rutgers joined the Big Ten in 2015.
