LINCOLN, Neb. – Rutgers baseball won its series finale over Nebraska by a score of 7-5 on Sunday afternoon at Haymarket Park.
The Scarlet Knights (15-17, 5-7) took an early lead over the Cornhuskers (14-18, 4-8) and were able to hold off a late rally to avoid the sweep.
RU opened up the scoring in the third on an RBI single from Trevor Cohen, scoring Matt Chatelle who singled to lead off the frame.
Nebraska evened it up in the fourth on a seeing-eye grounder with two outs to make it 1-1. The Scarlet Knights then struck for three in the fifth to jump out to another lead.
Peyton Bonds started the scoring in the frame with an RBI double to bring home Pablo Santos. Cohen lifted a sac fly to score Bonds and Brennan Hyde doubled off the wall in left-center to bring in Jack Sweeney, pushing the RU lead to 4-1.
The Cornhuskers got one back in the sixth on an RBI double, which Rutgers quickly answered with an RBI single from Hyde in the seventh. Nebraska kept battling back, making it 5-4 after seven innings on a pair of unearned runs.
On the first pitch of the eighth, Yomar Carreras ambushed a fastball and sent it into the right field bleachers for his first career home run. Ty Doucette pushed it to 7-4 with an RBI single later in the frame.
Despite NU adding one more in the eighth, Luke Fithian was able to escape the jam and limit the damage. Fithian then worked around a leadoff walk to retire the final three batters to secure the victory.
Making his first start in a Rutgers uniform, Quinn Berglin gave a strong effort with five innings, giving up two runs on five hits, striking out one and walking one. He earned the victory in the game, improving the 3-1 on the season.
After Berglin put a runner on in the sixth, Fithian came on in relief and stranded the runner. Fithian would go on to tie a season high with four innings out of the bullpen, yielding two earned runs on four hits, striking out three and walking one. Fithian earned his second save of the season, getting the final 12 outs of the game.

Rutgers is back in action against Seton Hall for a 6 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday at Bainton Field.
