PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Four players from Rutgers baseball received All-Big Ten honors as voted by the coaches and announced by the conference on Tuesday afternoon.
OF Trevor Cohen led the way with an All-Big Ten Second Team selection – his first honor on one of the conference's first three teams. Cohen had a historic breakout junior year for RU, setting a Big Ten and program record with 55 hits in conference play. His .467 average in conference play led the league by 86 points. For the season, Cohen's 87 hits are tied with David DeJesus for 10th-most in a single season in program history. Cohen was one of the toughest outs in the entire country, with his 5.7 K% leading the Power Four and the Big Ten, as he was also the toughest player in the conference and Power Four to strike out – just once every 15.1 at-bats. Cohen collected his 200th career hit against Illinois and his 219 career hits are 13th all-time at Rutgers. On the season, Cohen hit .385 with two home runs, one triple and 23 doubles with 36 RBIs and 30 walks to just 15 strikeouts, adding six outfield assists.
Additionally, RHP Landon Mack, RHP Justin Shadek and INF Yomar Carreras were all named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. The team's three All-Freshman honorees tie Indiana for the most in the conference and Rutgers was one of just four teams with multiple selections.
Mack emerged as the team's ace on the mound as a true freshman, starting all 14 weekends. He posted a 4.36 ERA with 64 strikeouts to just 17 walks in 74.1 innings pitched. Mack was named Big Ten Pitcher and Freshman of the Week after pitching seven shutout innings in a win at No. 9 Oregon earlier this season.
Shadek – a redshirt freshman – joined Mack in starting all 14 weekends for RU. Shadek posted a 4-4 record with 51 strikeouts in 58 innings, posting a career high with seven strikeouts in five strong innings at Purdue, with just one walk.
Carreras – a true freshman – earned the starting shortstop job and started 43 games, missing 12 due to injury early in the year. He posted a .969 fielding percentage as one of the top defensive players in the conference, while also belting five home run, six doubles and 22 RBIs. Carreras was a standout in conference play, hitting .300 in Big Ten games to rank third on the team and posting seven extra-base hits with an .818 OPS in conference play.
Rounding out the conference awards in senior LHP Joe Mazza, who was named the recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
