Baseball Beats Michigan in Series Opener

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball beat Michigan in Friday night's series opener at Bainton Field by a score of 4-3.
The Scarlet Knights (15-10, 4-3) overcame an early 3-0 deficit and received 4.2 shutout innings from the bullpen to defeat the Wolverines (12-13, 1-6).
RU scored four unanswered runs on the night, highlighted by two to take the lead in the sixth. With two on and two out, Peyton Bonds ripped an RBI single to tie the game at three. Tristan Salinas followed with an RBI single of his own to make it 4-3.
Zack Konstantinovsky started for the Scarlet Knights, fighting through 4.1 innings and giving up three runs on five hits with three strikeouts. He was relieved by Jordan Saviñon, who stranded a runner with a groundout and popup. An infield single from Joey Erace and RBI single from Quinten Perilli scored a pair in the fourth to make it a one-run game.
While Michigan was able to load the bases with one out in the sixth, Zach Gleason came in and ended the threat. He got a looking strikeout and groundout to end the frame, setting up his offense to rally for the lead.
Gleason was relieved by Andrew Rondini with two outs in the seventh. Rondini was able to strand a runner with an inning-ending flyout. After the Wolverines got a pair on with two outs in the eighth, Joe Mazza got the call to finish off the game. He struck out a pinch-hitter to end the inning before throwing a scoreless ninth to earn his first save of the season.
Game two between Rutgers and Michigan is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
