PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball dropped a midweek contest to Marist by a score of 10-3 on Tuesday night at Bainton Field.
The Scarlet Knights (17-19) were unable to overcome a pair of big innings from the Red Foxes (14-20), who scored four in the sixth and six in the eighth to earn the win.
Jack Sweeney had three hits and pair of home runs for his first career multi-home run game. All told, the RU offense collected 15 hits but stranded 13 runners and was unable to mount a comeback.
Jordan Saviñon provided a strong start as the opener, pitching two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Sweeney's first home run was a solo shot in the first to make it 1-0. While that lead held for the first five innings, Marist scored four in the sixth to take control of the game.
Another solo home from Sweeney made it 4-2 before an RBI single from Matt Chatelle made it 4-3.
With the game sitting at 4-3 in the top of the eighth, the Red Foxes exploded for six runs to take a 10-3 advantage. The damage was all done with no outs, with the visitors using a pair of bases-loaded walks and three run-scoring singles.
Rutgers is back in action with a road midweek at St. Joe's tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Merion Station.
