PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 3, 2014) - Sophomore Sean Feeney (Cranford, N.J.) hit a go-ahead double and made a game-saving catch in the outfield to lead the Scarlet to a 6-4 win over the Knights in the opening game of the Rutgers World Series Friday at Bainton Field. The contest began a best-of-seven series.
"I thought it was a hard-fought game by both sides today," head coach Joe Litterio said. "The Scarlet team was able to come up with the big plays to take the victory. I was pleased with the competition."
Feeney, who saw action in eight games as a freshman, earned MVP of the day with two doubles and a sliding in catch in the final inning in left field with bases loaded to preserve the win. Feeney had the go-ahead two-bagger with two on and no out in the fifth to put the Scarlet in the lead.
Junior John Jennings (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) also sparked the Scarlet offense with a double, two walks and two RBIs in a productive appearance. Sophomore Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) and senior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) also had an RBI on the winning side.
For the Knights, junior R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.) and freshman Doug deMarrais (Bernardsville, N.J.) each had multi-hit games.
On the mound, freshman John O'Reilly (Northvale, N.J.) earned the win with one earned run allowed over three innings of relief, while classmate Alex Wolf (Manalapan, N.J.) picked up the save. Sophomore Colin Bohnert (West Caldwell, N.J.) was effective with one earned run permitted over three frames in the start.
Game two of the series is set for Sunday at 11 a.m. and is open to the public.
