PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 5, 2014) - Behind an early offensive outburst and three scoreless innings from junior Howie Brey (Middletown, N.J.), the Scarlet took game two of the Rutgers World Series, 9-0, Sunday to jump out to a 2-0 series advantage. Junior Mark McCoy (Barnegat, N.J.), junior David Yakopec (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and sophomore Kyle Driscoll (Toms River, N.J.) combined with Brey on the shutout.
"The Scarlet team came out swinging in the first and then capitalized on free bases throughout the next three innings," head coach Joe Litterio said. "Howie looked in midseason form setting the table for his squad and the relievers followed what he started."
Offensively, the Scarlet scored seven runs in the first two innings to take a commanding lead. Senior Joe D'Annunzio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and sophomore Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) each had two hits and two runs in the game, while sophomore Chris Folinusz (Cranford, N.J.) had two hits of his own. Freshman Kyle Walker (Piscataway, N.J.) drew four walks in as many plate appearances.
Brey, who made the Friday starts last season for RU, struck out five in the three-inning outing with two hits surrendered. Fellow lefties McCoy and Yakopec continued the efforts with effective relief, with Driscoll striking out the side to end the game.
For the Knights, sophomores Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.) and Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) each tossed a scoreless frame after starting the game in the infield. Junior Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.) was the lone hitter to reach base twice, singling and walking.
Game three of the series is set for Friday at 11 a.m. and is open to the public.
