Scarlet Clinches Rutgers Fall World Series
Oct 21 | Baseball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Winning for the third consecutive game, the Scarlet squad earned a 2-1 victory to earn the title of Rutgers Fall World Series champions. The game marked the end of team fall workouts for Rutgers baseball.
"It was a well-played series with three of the four games decided by a run," head coach Joe Litterio said. "It was a good way to finish out a solid fall."
Senior R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.) picked up game MVP honors with a dash from second to home in the top of the third that proved to be the winning run. Standing at second in a 1-1 game, Devish went on the pitch to steal third and continued around when the ball went astray to score. It was similar to when the catcher advanced from second on a two-base wild pitch last season to walk-off St. Peter's at Bainton Field.
Senior Howie Brey (Middletown, N.J.) collected the win for the Scarlet with three effective innings on the mound. The left-hander fanned five and permitted one run. Following up, junior Ryan Fleming (Churchville, Pa.) tossed three scoreless with three strikeouts of his own. Fourth-year junior Kyle Driscoll (Toms River, N.J.) retired the side in the last inning to earn the save.
The Scarlet jumped on top with one run in the first. Freshman Luke Bowerbank (Bernardsville, N.J.) worked a walk and moved up on a single by Devish. After a wild pitch, sophomore Kyle Walker (Piscataway, N.J.) connected for an RBI single.
The Knights responded with one in the bottom of the second to even the game. Fifth-year senior Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.) hit a two-out RBI single to bring home freshman Serafino Brito (Oakland, N.J.).
That led to the third, where Devish scored what ended up being the winning run.
Devish and Walker each had two hits for the Scarlet, while junior Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) singled and walked. For the Knights, Suseck had two hits and junior Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) recorded a hit and two walks. Senior Reed Shuttle (Lansdale, Pa.) struck out six over three innings in the start on the mound.
