Baseball Downed in Nightcap, 9-3

Feb. 14, 2015

Box Score

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Rutgers baseball fell 9-3 to No. 9 Miami in the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader at Alex Rodriguez Park. Down six, the Scarlet Knights batted around in the eighth inning to put the tying on base, but came up short.

The rally started with two outs and no one on base when freshman Kyle Walker (Piscataway, N.J.) walked as a pinch hitter and moved up to third on a double by sophomore Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.). Walker then scored on a wild pitch to break the shutout. Freshman Milo Freeman (Millburn, N.J.) walked to keep the inning alive, with senior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) reaching on an error to bring in Carter. Next up, sophomore Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) shot a clean RBI single up the middle to drive home Freeman. Sophomore Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.) walked to put the tying run on first, but Miami escaped the threat with a groundout.

The Hurricanes (3-0) answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to put the game back to a six-run margin. UM had built its early lead with two in the first, one in the second, one in the third and two in the fifth. Third baseman David Thompson led all players with three hits in the game.

On the mound, freshman Ryan Wares (Howell, N.J.) was effective in his collegiate debut with two innings of work out of the bullpen. The right-hander entered in the sixth with two outs and stranded two inherited runners. Sophomore Ryan Fleming (Churchville, Pa.) and senior Jon Young (Old Bridge, N.J.) both saw relief action as well, as sophomore Kyle Driscoll (Toms River, N.J.) (0-1) took the loss in a four-inning start.

Enrique Sosa (1-0) struck out 10 over 5.2 scoreless innings to earn the victory for the hosts. Cooper Hammond picked up the save after entering in the eighth to thwart the RU rally.

Rutgers (0-3) will look to salvage the series finale in Coral Gables Sunday at 1 p.m. Sophomore Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.), a 2014 Freshman All-America selection, will make his first start of the season on the hill.
