CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Rutgers baseball dropped the series finale of its series at No. 9 Miami, 25-4, Sunday at Alex Rodriguez Park. The game completed a four-game series to start the season.
Sophomore Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) collected a single, double, run and RBI to lead the Scarlet Knights offensively, while senior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) had a pair of singles with an RBI. Freshman Milo Freeman (Millburn, N.J.), junior John Jennings (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) and junior R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.) also scored runs.
Miami (4-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the second. Sophomore Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) nearly escaped a bases-loaded situation, but a two-out double by Rickey Eusebio cleared the bases. Zack Collins followed with a high fly that was lost in the sun to plate a fourth in the inning.
Rutgers (0-4) answered back in the next half inning to cut into the deficit. Freeman registered his first collegiate hit to start the frame and moved up to third on an errant pickoff attempt. Jennings then worked a walk to put runners at the corners, with Freeman scoring on an RBI groundout by Devish. After Carter singled, Jennings came home on a wild pitch. Next, Carter advanced to third and came in on an infield single by Zarrillo, who hustled to beat the first baseman and pitcher to the bag.
However, that was as close as RU would get, as UM totaled two in the third and 12 in the fourth to expand their advantage to 18-3. RU picked up a run in the fifth when Devish singled and moved up on an error. Carter followed with a double to right for the RBI.
Rosa (0-1) suffered the loss in his first start, as RU used six pitchers in the game. Derik Beauprez (1-0) earned the win for Miami in relief.
Rutgers will return to the road for a four-game road series at No. 25 Tennessee starting Friday. The Friday and Sunday games will be broadcast on SEC Network +.
