PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Freshman John O'Reilly (Northvale, N.J.) allowed just one run and three hits over seven innings on the mound, but an eighth-inning rally by Wagner sent Rutgers baseball to an 11-4 defeat Tuesday at Bainton Field. The game was added to the schedule earlier in the day.
Offensively, the Scarlet Knights racked up 13 hits with junior Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.) reaching base all five plate appearances with three singles and two walks. Junior R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.) also had a three-hit day, while sophomore Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) and junior John Jennings (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) each had a pair. Marcinczyk has now reached base safely in each of the past 24 games.
Making his fourth start, O'Reilly had a career-long outing and left in line to win. The right-hander struck out three and walked three on 99 pitches, recording 10 groundouts. Now having enough innings to qualify, he leads the staff with a 3.09 ERA for the season.
Rutgers (10-20) took an early lead with one run in the first. With two outs, Marcinczyk and senior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) both singled through the right side to put two aboard. Suseck then delivered an RBI single to right field.
After Wagner (9-10-1) tied it in the second, RU plated another. Sophomore Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.) worked a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a single by freshman Milo Freeman (Millburn, N.J.). Next up, sophomore Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) put the ball in play for an RBI fielder's choice.
The lead expanded to 4-1 in the fourth. Jennings and Carter both doubled with one out for a score, as Carter next stole third and came in on a wild pitch.
The game would stay locked at 4-1 in favor of Rutgers until the eighth. However, the Seahawks rallied to bring in 10 runs on eight hits to take control of the game. Nathan Hunt (1-0) picked up the win in relief, while Anthony Battaglia closed out the last two innings. Sophomore Colin Bohnert (West Caldwell, N.J.) (0-1) took the loss for Rutgers out of the bullpen.
Having played its last 11 games at home, RU will travel to Fordham Wednesday for a 3 p.m. road contest.
