Baseball Powers Past NJIT, 10-3

March 19, 2016

Box Score

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Fourth-year junior Kyle Driscoll (Toms River, N.J.) pitched five shutout innings and the offense batted around in the third on the way to downing NJIT, 10-3, in a Saturday neutral site matchup at the United States Naval Academy. The contest wrapped up a seven-game spring break for the Scarlet Knights that also had stops in Boca Raton and Fort Myers, Fla.

Making his 19th career start, Driscoll (1-2) permitted just one hit in the 94-pitch appearance to earn his first win of the season. The right-hander fanned seven, his most since sitting down 11 against Cincinnati on April 19, 2014. Sophomore John O'Reilly (Northvale, N.J.) followed up with three innings out of the bullpen, while freshman Kevin Romero (Garfield, N.J.) worked a perfect ninth to end the game.

At the plate, sophomore Milo Freeman (Millburn, N.J.) drove in three runs on two hits, including a triple. Senior R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.) also contributed two RBIs, with junior Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) adding two singles. In addition, freshman Carmen Sclafani (Toms River, N.J.) scored three times and junior Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) drew three walks.

After each side went down scoreless through the first two frames, the Scarlet Knights (8-10) exploded for five runs in the third. Sclafani started it with a single up the middle and moved up on a walk to Rosa. Freshman Luke Bowerbank (Bernardsville, N.J.) then came through with a single to load the bases for Devish, who hit an RBI fielder's choice with an error that kept the bases loaded. Next up, fifth-year Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.) lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Rosa. Bowerbank would cross on a balk and Freeman would cap the rally with a two-run single to left.

That was all Driscoll would need, as the right-hander held the Highlanders (7-9) to 0-for-5 with runners on base.

Rutgers furthered its lead with three more in the fifth. Devish started with a single and Marcinczyk singled through the right side to put runners at the corners with one down. Freshman Nick Matera (Roxbury, N.J.) knocked home Devish with an RBI groundout. Freeman followed with a triple for another run and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-0.

In the sixth, Devish chased home Sclafani with a sacrifice fly, but NJIT brought in three on four hits in the bottom half to cut it to 9-3. RU would score the final run of the game in the eighth when Marcinczyk forced in Sclafani with a bases-loaded walk.

For the Highlanders, starter Ian Bentley (2-3) took the loss with eight runs (five earned) over 4.2 innings. Evan Pietronico had two of the team's seven hits.

Rutgers will next head back to New Jersey and play a Wednesday road game at Rider. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
