PISCATAWAY, N.J. - After winning the first two games of the series, Rutgers baseball was unable to pull off the sweep in a 9-2 loss to Indiana Saturday at Bainton Field. The contest was the nightcap of a doubleheader, as a poor Sunday weather forecast forced the series finale to be moved up.
Rutgers fell to 11-16 on the season and 2-4 in in the Big Ten, while Indiana improved to 13-13 and 1-2. It was the Scarlet Knights' first home loss of the year (5-1).
After each side went down scoreless in the first three frames, Indiana used home runs by Craig Dedlow and Ryan Fineman to take a 3-0 lead in the fourth. Rutgers responded with one in the fifth. Sophomore Milo Freeman (Millburn, N.J.) earned a walk and eventually came home on an RBI groundout by fifth-year senior Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.).
However, the Hoosiers strung together six more runs to break open the game. The Scarlet Knights added one in the seventh on an RBI single by senior R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.).
Freeman reached base three times via walk, while Devish notched two of the team's five hits.
Sophomore John O'Reilly (Northvale, N.J.) (0-2) worked 6.1 innings, but took the loss. Out of the bullpen, junior Ryan Fleming (Churchville, Pa.) and senior Reed Shuttle (Lansdale, N.J.) combined to pitch 2.2 innings without permitting an earned run. Paul Milto (2-1) was credited with the win in relief for IU, while Tim Belcher pitched the final three innings to collect his second save.
Rutgers will continue its six-game homestand Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. game against Fordham. The next weekend series will be versus St. Joseph's.
