PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Junior Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.) delivered a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning and redshirt junior Max Herrmann (Rutherford, N.J.) closed the door on the mound to lift Rutgers baseball to a 3-2 victory over Indiana in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Bainton Field. The win clinched the Big Ten series win for the Scarlet Knights, as the team improved to 5-0 at home.
In addition, the triumph marked the 300th career victory for head coach Joe Litterio.
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Scarlet Knights (11-15, 2-3) put together three runs to take the lead. Senior R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.) started it off with a walk and fifth-year senior Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.) singled to put two on with one out. Next up, junior Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) laced an RBI single up the middle to put Rutgers on the board. A strikeout went down as the second out, but Campbell stepped up and struck a booming two-run double to the left-center gap.
From there, Herrmann took over on the mound and pitched three scoreless innings of relief to collect his third save of the season. The left-hander stranded two in the ninth to seal the victory for redshirt junior Kyle Driscoll (Toms River, N.J.) (2-3), who earned his first career Big Ten win. The right-hander surrendered two runs, but battled through the middle innings to pitch six-plus frames. He struck out six and scattered four hits.
At the plate, Marcinczyk registered two of the team's four hits to extend his on-base streak to 18 games. Suseck also reached base three times, while Devish walked twice.
Evan Bell (0-3) suffered the loss for the Hoosiers (12-13, 0-2) with the three runs allowed in the sixth. The visiting offense notched 11 hits, but stranded 11 on base in the game.
The series finale immediately followed from Bainton Field.
