May 24 | Baseball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Senior Howie Brey (Middletown, N.J.), senior R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.) and freshman Jawuan Harris (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) all represented Rutgers baseball on the All-Big Ten teams announced by the league Tuesday. Devish earned All-Big Ten Second Team at catcher and the team Sportsmanship Award, while Brey collected All-Big Ten Third Team as a starting pitcher. Harris was recognized as an outfielder on the All-Big Ten Freshman Team.
Previously honored as a national semifinalist for the Olson Award for national breakout player of the year, Devish capped his Rutgers career leading the Big Ten with a .524 on-base percentage, which ranked No. 7 nationally and first among all seniors in the country. The mark is the highest by a Scarlet Knight since 1994 and the first over .500 by a Big Ten player since 2009. Devish also paced the conference with 56 runs scored, ranked second with 24 stolen bases, fourth with 41 walks and 15 times being hit by pitch and fifth with a .375 batting average. The stolen bases are first among all catchers in the nation and No. 39 overall. In addition, the leadoff hitter had 20 multiple-hit games and caught 10 runners stealing from behind the plate. This the first all-conference honor for Devish and seventh by a Rutgers catcher since 1992.
Brey garners his second career all-conference honor and first pitching in the Big Ten. The left-hander worked 100.1 innings as a senior, second-most in the conference, with four complete games in league play (Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Maryland). He also placed fifth with 84 strikeouts, a total that ranks third in a single season in school history. For his career, Brey sits fourth with 291.1 innings, tied for third with 206 strikeouts and tied for eighth with 18 victories in the program record books. He is the first All-Big pitcher for RU.
Harris had a league-high 37 stolen bases (17 against league opponents), a total that is fourth in the nation, the most by a Big Ten player since 2010 and third-most in a year in school history. The outfielder recoded nine multiple-steal games, including twice taking four bases in a contest. There had not been a four-steal day for a Scarlet Knight since 2004 prior. In addition, he ended the season on a 20-game on-base streak and batted .302 in conference games.
