JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior Mike Carter drove in five runs to highlight an 18-hit attack for Rutgers baseball in a 12-4 win over North Florida Sunday at Harmon Stadium. The Scarlet Knights (6-9) earned a weekend split against the Ospreys (11-6) after taking the final two games of the series.
All nine RU starters scored at least one run, with Carter knocking in a career-high five runs on three singles and a double for a 4-for-5 day. It was his second career four-hit game, as he has reached base safely in the last 17 games dating back to last season.
Senior Tom Marcinczyk also enjoyed a 4-for-6 showing, while junior Milo Freeman added three hits. From the middle infield, sophomore Carmen Sclafani had two hits, including a two-run single, and freshman Kevin Welsh recorded a triple and a single with two runs. Sophomore Jawuan Harris scored a team-high three runs as the leadoff hitter.
On the mound, senior Christian Campbell (2-0) picked up his second win of the season by holding North Florida to three earned runs over five innings. The right-hander permitted five hits and stranded seven runners on base. The bullpen combined for four scoreless innings, with freshman Joe Neglia striking out three in two frames. Both freshman Eric Reardon and senior Ryan Fleming both tossed an inning to close out the victory.
The Scarlet Knights went on top for the third time in the series with a quick run in the first inning. Harris ripped a single up the middle on the first pitch of the game, stole second and advanced to third on a ground ball to the right side by sophomore Luke Bowerbank. Carter came up next and lifted a sacrifice fly, as Harris beat the throw from right field. However, the Ospreys responded with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the inning and added another in the second to go up, 3-1.
That led to the third, where RU rallied with two outs to plate four runs and take the lead. Carter singled with two outs and no one on and Freeman followed with a hit of his own to put two on. Next up, Marcinczyk lined an RBI single to right field to bring home Carter. Junior Chris Folinusz then walked to load the bases to bring up junior Kyle Walker, who grounded a ball to first and hustled down the line to force an error to tie the game. Sclafani entered after that and drilled a two-run single up the middle to score two and give Rutgers a 5-3 advantage.
The visitors added another run in the fourth. Bowerbank worked a walk, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Carter. That frame would also feature a 15-pitch at bat by Freeman that resulted in a single.
UNF cut it to 6-4 on an unearned run in the fourth, but RU answered back with three in the fifth. Walker laced a leadoff single and ran to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sclafani. Welsh followed with a ringing RBI triple to the left-center gap and scored himself on a fielder's choice hit by Harris. Carter would cap the rally with a two-out RBI double to make it 9-4.
In the seventh, Welsh reached on an error, advanced on a Harris sacrifice bunt and a Bowerbank single. Carter then collected his fourth RBI of the day on a groundout to third base. He would add another batted in on a two-out single in the ninth.
Adam Polansky (0-1) suffered the loss for North Florida, who surrendered a season-high 12 runs.
The Scarlet Knights will next head to Boca Raton, Florida, for a Tuesday game at Florida Atlantic. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
