SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Sophomore Jawuan Harris hit three home runs as Rutgers baseball finished off a sweep of USC Upstate with an 11-3 win in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader at Harley Park. The Scarlet Knights (9-14) previously won in the series by the scores of 10-7 and 5-1.
It marked the first three-game series sweep for RU since taking down USF at home in 2014, with the last road sweep at Villanova in 2013. The previous three-game away non-conference sweep happened in 2012 at Old Dominion. Rutgers last took both ends of a doubleheader on May 11, 2013 versus Georgetown.
For Harris, the leadoff hitter mashed long balls in the first, third and fifth innings to become the first Scarlet Knight to take a round trip three times in a game since Nick Cerulo in 2002 at Columbia. He now has a team-best seven home runs on the season.
Senior Mike Carter added two hits for his 12th multiple-hit game of the year, while sophomore Mike Martinez had two singles to finish the doubleheader with five hits. Junior Milo Freeman contributed two hits and senior Tom Marcinczyk reached three times on two walks and a single. Rutgers tallied 21 runs on 29 hits for the doubleheader.
On the mound, senior Gaby Rosa (3-1) struck out five in a five-inning start for his 10th career victory. The right-hander permitted just one run in the outing. Freshman Eric Reardon, sophomore Kevin Romero and freshman Kyle Gerace all worked a scoreless frame of relief.
The Scarlet Knights jumped out quickly with six run in the first inning, hitting for a team cycle. Harris started the outburst with a solo home run on the second pitch of the game. Carter and Marcinczyk both followed with walks to bring up senior Christian Campbell, who laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away to permit two to score. After the first out, Martinez grounded a ball to first base to chase home Campbell. Junior Chris Folinusz kept it going with a single, with sophomore Carmen Sclafani hitting an RBI triple and freshman Kevin Welsh lacing a run-scoring double to cap the rally.
In the second, Carter led off with a double and Campbell found space in the outfield for a double that put two in scoring positon. Freeman would then single to third base for an RBI and Martinez singled to make it 8-0.
Harris would connect on his second solo big fly in the third inning and would clear the left-center scoreboard in the fifth to finish with four RBIs. The outfielder now has 10 career home runs.
Connor Campbell (1-2) took the loss for the Spartans (12-14), who scored one in the fifth and two in the ninth. J.J. Shimko drew a game-high three walks, but the home team stranded 14 on base.
Rutgers will next return to New Jersey for a midweek home-and-home series against Monmouth, starting Tuesday on the road. The Scarlet Knights will then stay home to start Big Ten play against Maryland at Bainton Field over the weekend.
