PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers baseball fell behind early and could not recover in a 9-1 loss in the nightcap of a Sunday doubleheader against Maryland at Bainton Field. The game wrapped up the first Big Ten series of the season for the Scarlet Knights.
Coming off the bench, sophomore Nick Matera highlighted the offense with his second three-hit game of the season. Redshirt freshman Tommy Genuario also added a single as a pinch hitter.
Freshman Joe Neglia fired a career-high three innings of relief, striking out three and permitting just one hit and one run in the outing. Fifth-year senior Max Herrmann added two scoreless frames out of the bullpen, while senior Gaby Rosa (3-2) took the loss as the starter.
Maryland (18-8, 5-1) built up a 6-0 lead after three innings and added two in the fourth and one in the fifth. Rutgers (10-17, 0-3) scored in the sixth when senior Mike Carter came around on a dropped fly ball hit by sophomore Carmen Sclafani. However, the Scarlet Knights were unable to rally further in the late innings.
Starter Tyler Blohm (5-2) earned the win for the visitors with no earned runs permitted over 5.2 innings. Marty Costes had three hits with a home run at the plate, while Brandon Gum also hit a homer and knocked in three.
Rutgers will return to the road Wednesday to face Villanova in midweek action at 3 p.m. The next Big Ten series is scheduled to start Friday at Minnesota.
