PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers baseball took a 3-2 lead after four innings, but No. 17 Michigan rallied for four unanswered runs to claim a 6-3 win Saturday at Bainton Field. The series will now move to a decisive rubber game on Sunday.
Senior Christian Campbell blasted a solo home run and singled to spark the Scarlet Knights' offensive attack, while freshman Kevin Welsh extended his hitting streak to nine game with a two-run triple. In addition, junior Chris Folinusz collected two more hits and is hitting .478 (11-for-23) with six doubles in Big Ten play this season.
On the mound, sophomore Serafino Brito (3-7) worked into the sixth inning for the fifth-straight start, but took the loss with four runs (two earned) surrendered over 5.2 innings. Both sophomore Kevin Romero and freshman Eric Reardon turned in scoreless relief outings.
After Michigan (32-10, 8-6) plated a pair of runs in the second, Rutgers (16-24, 5-6) responded right away in the bottom half of the inning. Campbell and Folinusz started the inning with singles and advanced on a passed ball. The next two batters went down, but Welsh came through with a two-out, two-run triple to the right-field corner to tie the game. He now has three triples.
In the fourth, Campbell led off with a lined shot over the left-wall for his second homer of the season. The long ball gave the Scarlet Knights a 3-2 advantage.
However, the Wolverines responded with two in the fourth and two in the seventh to build a three-run lead. Mac Lozer (1-0) struck out six over three innings of relief for the win and Jackson Lamb earned his ninth save to close the game.
RU will play a rubber game for the third consecutive weekend, having won versus Purdue and Iowa. First pitch from Bainton Field is set for Sunday at 11 a.m.
