PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball will be in search of its second consecutive ranked win in a non-conference game against No. 17 Indiana Friday at North Charlotte Regional Park in Port Charlotte, Florida. The Scarlet Knights will then take on St. Bonaventure Saturday (South Charlotte Regional Park) and Boston College Sunday (North Charlotte Regional Park ) to round out the weekend. RU is scheduled to play 13 of its first 18 games in the Sunshine State.
Â
Coming back from a five-run deficit, Rutgers rallied to take the series finale at No. 9 Miami last Sunday. Freshman
Eric Heatter, who was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, racked up eight strikeouts in four scoreless innings of relief to earn the win on the mound in his first collegiate appearance. It was the most strikeouts in a debut since Bobby Brownlie also had eight in 2000.
Â
Offensively, senior
Kyle Walker reached base three times in the victory on an RBI single, a triple and a walk. Redshirt freshman
Dan DiGeorgio added two singles and led the team with four hits on the weekend. The lineup also drew 18 walks in the three games.
Â
Senior
John O'Reilly will take the ball for the Friday game against the Hoosiers for his 37
th career start. Freshman
Harry Rutkowski, who made his debut on Sunday and left with the lead, will follow on Saturday versus the Bonnies. The Sunday starter will be determined later.
Â
The bullpen will look to repeat its success after posting 0.59 ERA with one run allowed in 15.1 innings in the Miami series. Heatter's four innings of shutout ball highlighted the unit, as sophomore
Eric Reardon contributed three scoreless innings, redshirt junior
Ryan Wares 2.1 and redshirt sophomore
Tommy Genuario two. In addition, graduate student
Karl Blum earned his first save by not allowing a run in one inning to close out the win. The staff averaged over a strikeout per inning overall with 28 punchouts in 25 frames.
Â
NOTABLE
This is the 36th straight year the team played at least one game in the state of Florida … the team that scored first in the series at Miami lost each game … Rutgers is 17-0 since the beginning of last season when leading after six innings … this series marks the second of five weekends away from Bainton Field to start the campaign.
Â
THE OPPONENTS
Indiana is ranked No. 17 in the latest
Perfect Game rankings and was the preseason pick to win the Big Ten in the coaches' poll. The Hoosiers dropped their opener to Oklahoma, but have rallied since to beat Kansas State, South Alabama and Coastal Carolina. Logan Sowers is slugging .813 so far, while Luke Miller has seven RBIs. Probable starter Jonathan Stiever surrendered six earned runs and eight hits over five innings against the Sooners.
Â
Rutgers and Indiana did not meet last season and are not scheduled to play once again the Big Ten regular season in 2018. This contest will not impact the league standings. In the last matchup at Bainton Field in 2016, the Scarlet Knights took the weekend by winning the first two. IU leads the all-time series, 4-2.
Â
St. Bonaventure has yet to play this season, but will take on Chicago State on Friday before facing RU. The Bonnies went 26-22 and 15-8 in the Atlantic 10 last season. Probable starter Nate Grant appeared in four games out of the bullpen in 2017.
Â
The Scarlet Knights lead the all-time over the Bonnies, 7-2, as the two teams were both in the Atlantic 10 from 1993-95. The last encounter was a 16-12 triumph for RU in the 1995 Atlantic 10 semifinals.
Â
Boston College began the season by taking 2-of-3 on the road at Santa Clara. Jake Palomaki slugged .929 with six RBIs and four runs. Brian Rapp, who will start Sunday, threw six no-hit and no-run innings with 10 strikeouts to win the rubber game. The right-hander was named ACC Pitcher of the Week.
Â
Rutgers and Boston College have not met since 2005, but were in the Big East together from 1996-2005. The Scarlet Knights lead the series dating back to 1946, 16-8.
Â
UP NEXT
The Scarlet Knights will host Wagner in their home opener Tuesday at 3 p.m. It would be the earliest home game on the calendar in program history. The next weekend series is at Old Dominion.
