PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Playing extra innings for the second-straight game, a three-run home run by Florida Gulf Coast (12-5) with two outs in the 11
th inning downed Rutgers baseball (4-10), 4-1, Friday at Swanson Stadium. The game saw a combined 26 runners left on base between the teams.

"We have been getting runners on, but not getting them in," head coach
Joe Litterio said. "That's been our season so far. We've had opportunities and have to figure out how to score more runs. Every game you can see us getting better and gaining experience. We have played a lot of close games and are learning how to deal with the pressures of tight situations. The next step is getting that big hit at the plate. It will come."

Sophomore
Harry Rutkowski continued his consistency as the Rutgers staff ace, allowing one run in six innings. The left-hander struck out six, scattered four hits and walked two in the start. Redshirt junior
Tommy Genuario followed with a scoreless frame, with redshirt junior
Steven Acosta collecting two outs in the eighth. Senior
Serafino Brito stranded two inherited runners and later moved the game to extra innings by picking up a called strike out with two on in the bottom of the ninth. The staff held FGCU, which entered the day ranked 13
th in the nation in batting average and 16
th in runs, to eight hits in the game and rung up 12 strikeouts.

Offensively, junior
Kevin Welsh and redshirt freshman
Tim Dezzi each had two hits with a walk, while freshman
David Soto had a double for his first collegiate RBI. RU left 14 on base and FGCU stranded 12.

SCORING
- Florida Gulf Coast took the lead in the first inning on a two-out RBI single by Richie Garcia.
- The Scarlet Knights evened the game in the fourth when freshman Victor Valderrama walked with two outs and scored from first on double to left-center by Soto.
- After a close play at first on a potential double play extended the inning, Joe Kinker hit a three-run homer in the 11th to end the game.

Hunter McGarry (2-0) worked 2.1 scoreless innings for the win.

It was the first game of a seven-game spring break trip for the Scarlet Knights. The last time RU went extra innings in back-to-back games was in March 2013, playing at Richmond and VCU. The contest lasted four hours, 41 minutes and included 391 combined pitches.
