Weekly Athletic Communications Report - March 18

The Five Things to Know

1. Wrestling and swimming & diving begin NCAA postseason action this week. Four Scarlet Knights from swimming & diving head to the pool in Texas starting on Wednesday while six RU wrestlers begin competition on Friday in Pittsburgh.

2. The women's basketball team is a seven seed in the Albany Region of the 2019 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. The Scarlet Knights will meet No. 10 Buffalo on Friday in Storrs, Conn. in first round action.

3. Football held its annual Pro Day on Friday, March 15 as representatives from all 32 NFL teams were on hand to evaluate several former Scarlet Knights.

4. Fourteen members of the field hockey team were named to the National Academic Squad by the NFHCA for posting a 3.3 GPA or higher in the fall semester.

5. Women's soccer began a 10-day, spring break training trip in Spain over the weekend. The team will visit Barcelona and Madrid and tour Seville, Valencia, and Zaragoza.



 

Women's Basketball (22-9, 13-5 Big Ten)

• The No. 7 Scarlet Knights will meet No. 10 Buffalo in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Gampel Pavilion (ESPN2). 

•  Should Rutgers advance, the Scarlet Knights will meet the winner between No. 2 UConn and No. 15 Towson on Sunday.

• Rutgers enters Selection Monday with an RPI of 29 with nine wins over Top 100 opponents and seven of nine losses against teams that have appeared in the Top 25 of the major polls.

• Tim Eatman will remain as acting head coach as C. Vivian Stringer remains on leave for the duration of the season.
 

Men's Basketball (14-17, 7-13 Big Ten)

• Continued its ascent under head coach Steve Pikiell. Per KenPom.com, Rutgers was the nation's most improved Power 6 conference program, among many notable accomplishments.

• Dropped a 68-61 decision to No. 13 seed Nebraska in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament. Eugene Omoruyi had 16 points, while Myles Johnson had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds (Recap).

• Sophomore guard Geo Baker and junior forward Eugene Omoruyi earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten honors. Baker received the accolade from both the league's coaches and media, while Omoruyi was selected by the media.
 

Wrestling (12-6, 5-4)

• Sends six wrestlers to the 2019 NCAA Championships from Thursday to Saturday in Pittsburgh.

• Anthony Ashnault (149) earned the program's first No. 1 seed as brackets and seeding for the NCAA Championships were unveiled.

• Nick Suriano (133) earned a No. 3 seed, while Peter Lipari (141), John Van Brill (157), Joe Grello (174) and Nick Gravina (184) will all compete during the three-day tournament.
 

Swimming & Diving

• Sends swimmers Terka Grusova, Vera Koprivova and Francesca Stoppa, and diver Rachel Byrne to the 2019 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas from Wednesday through Saturday (ESPNU/ESPN3).

• Rutgers' three swimmers to qualify for the national championships are the most since 2007.
 

Gymnastics (10-15, 2-7)

• Heads to Penn State this weekend for the Big Ten Championships on Big Ten Network. RU is in the noon session.

• Beat Cornell on the road with a 194.825 on Sunday (Recap).

• The Scarlet Knights have recorded a 194 or better in each of the past eight meets and in nine of the last 10. The 194.825 signaled the third-best team score of the season, as numbers two and three on the list have come in the past two weeks away from home.
 

No. 20 Men's Lacrosse (4-4)

• Hosts Hofstra on Saturday at 1 p.m. at HighPoint.com Stadium (BTN Plus).

• Fell 13-10 Tuesday night to No. 16 Lehigh despite a career-high four goals from Ryan Gallagher (Recap).

• Dropped an 18-14 decision at No. 13 Syracuse Saturday despite career-highs from Adam Charalambides (6 goals), Kieran Mullins (6 assists) and Max Edelmann (19 saves) (Recap).

• Following the win last Saturday over rival Princeton, earned two Big Ten weekly awards - Garrett Bullett (Defensive Player of the Week) and Max Edelmann (Specialist of the Week)

• Max Edelmann was named to the USILA Team of the Week after making 18 saves against Princeton, including one in the final seconds to preserve the one-goal victory.
 

Women's Lacrosse (4-5, 0-1 Big Ten)

• Faces Lafayette on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Easton, Pennsylvania (Preview | Lafayette Sports Network) and No. 17 Johns Hopkins at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Baltimore (Hopkins Sports).

• Dropped its Big Ten Conference opener to No. 6 Northwestern on Thursday at HighPoint.com Stadium. (Recap)


Baseball (5-11)

• Split four games last week with a win over Monmouth and a 1-2 weekend at Florida Gulf Coast.

• Walked off Monmouth on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning in home opener (Recap).

• Carmen Sclafani and Victor Valderrama hit back-to-back homers in Sunday win at FGCU, with five pitchers holding the Eagles to one run (Recap).

• Continues spring break trip in Florida with a Wednesday game at Harvard before facing off with 17-1 Indiana State on the weekend at a neutral field in Fort Myers.


Softball (15-11)

• Opens Big Ten play with a three-game set at RV/RV Northwestern on Friday (5 p.m. ET, BTN Plus), Saturday (2 p.m. ET, BTN Plus) and Sunday (1 p.m. ET, BTN Plus).

• Defeated St. Joseph's twice (6-5 and 8-4) and blanked Morgan State (8-0) during a 3-2 weekend at the James Madison Invitational in Harrisonburg, Virginia, while falling to No. 22 JMU (10-1) and Binghamton (2-1).

• Scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a 5-1 deficit to the Hawks on Friday as Nicole Bowman delivered the walk-off RBI single.

• Freshman Katie Wingert paced the offense with a .429 average, three home runs and 10 RBIs, while freshman Corah Price went 2-0 in the circle with 11 strikeouts and zero walks.


Women's Tennis (6-5, 1-3)

• Travels to New Orleans for two non conference matches with Southern on Friday and Binghamton on Saturday.

• Dropped two Big Ten matches at home to Minnesota on Friday (Recap) and Wisconsin on Sunday (Recap).

• Debuted new PlaySight system for live streaming and analytic technology.


Women's Golf

• Traveled to Fairfax, Calif., for the Juli Inkster Invitational at Meadow Club, today and tomorrow (Preview).

• No. 83-ranked RU joins six other programs rated among the Golfstat top 85 in the 12-team field.


Rowing

• Opens the 2019 season Sunday, March 24 at the Cooper Sprints in Cherry Hill, N.J.

• Scrimmaged against Temple on Saturday, March 16 for its final tune-up of the preseason.

• Opens its outdoor campaign on March 22-23 at the USF Bulls Invite.


Women's Track and Field

• Opens the outdoor season on March 22-23 at the USF Bulls Invite.

• Added the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships on Apr. 12-13 and Virginia Challenge on Apr. 19-20 to the outdoor schedule.
