Baseball Downed at Iowa

Four runs in sixth inning hurt Scarlet Knights

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa (17-11, 4-3) broke open a scoreless tie with four runs in the bottom of the sixth on the way to beating Rutgers baseball (8-18, 1-3), 6-1, Friday at Banks Field. It was the first of a three-game series.

"Tonight was a typical Friday night Big Ten game and they broke through first," head coach Joe Litterio said. "Harry pitched a very good ballgame until that point. One pitch went over the middle and the three-run homer put us behind. Offensively, we had plenty of runners on base and left 10. We need someone to step up and drive in those runs. Iowa did that tonight, which was the difference."

Sophomore Harry Rutkowski started his outing with five shutout frames and had retired eight in a row before the Hawkeyes rallied. The left-hander went 6.2 innings overall, striking out five. Sophomore Kyle Muller followed and left a runner at second before collecting three outs in the eighth without permitting a run.

The Scarlet Knights put runners on in every inning, out-hitting the Hawkeyes by the count of nine to seven. However, the team went 2-for-18 with runners. Freshman Chris Brito collected an RBI single to score redshirt freshman Tim Dezzi in the eighth inning. Sophomore Mike Nyisztor reached base four times as the leadoff hitter in the order, collecting two singles and two walks.

Cole McDonald pitched 6.1 scoreless innings for Iowa with eight strikeouts and three walks. Trace Hoffman stranded both inherited runners in a 4-0 game in the seventh and went the rest of the way for an eight-out save.
