Baseball Drops Game Two at No. 3 Miami

Suspended game finished Sunday

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Rutgers baseball (0-2) fell 8-2 to No. 3 Miami (2-0) in the second game of the series at Alex Rodriguez Park. The contest started Saturday before being suspended due to rain in the bottom of the seventh and finished on Sunday.

The Scarlet Knights rallied for two runs to take a 2-1 lead in the third inning on two-out hits by junior Mike Nyisztor and sophomore Richie Schiekofer. However, Adrian Del Castillo hit his second homer of the night, a two-run shot, to put UM back ahead, 3-2. A grand slam by Gabe Rivera in the seventh extend the home team's lead to five.
 
The game started with rain coming down and the precipitation continued throughout the night. The intensity picked up in the seventh inning and game was halted by the umpires.
 
On the mound, fifth-year senior Tommy Genuario (0-1) made his season debut with three runs surrendered over four innings, striking out five. Sophomore Jared Bellissimo followed with two scoreless frames of relief. Freshman Matt Ciccone made his collegiate debut with 1.2 innings of work.
 
For Miami, Chris McMahon (1-0) pitched six innings with two runs permitted. He struck out nine.
 
SCORING
  • Del Castillo hit a solo homer to left to put Miami ahead in the first inning, 1-0.
  • The Scarlet Knights rallied with two outs in the third to take the lead. Sophomore Victor Valderrama hit a one-out single, but was thrown out at third on a single by senior Kevin Welsh. Nyisztor then sliced a double down the right field line to score Welsh from first and tie the game. Next up, Schiekofer ripped an RBI single to right field, with Nyisztor sliding around the attempted tag at the plate.
  • Del Castillo connected for a homer to right field that was upheld after video review.
  • Rivera hit a grand slam to right field after the first three reached in the bottom of the seventh. JP Gates recorded a solo homer upon the game's resumption.
