Graduate transfer from Columbia named Honorable Mention All-Ivy League in 2019
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 1, 2020) – Head coach Steve Owens announced the addition of graduate transfer Ben Wereski to the Rutgers baseball program. An Honorable Mention All-Ivy League selection for Columbia in 2019, Wereski is set to join the Scarlet Knights for his final collegiate season this upcoming fall.
"We are very excited to add Ben's talent, maturity and experience to our pitching staff," Owens said. "He has been a very good weekend starter for most of his career and has pitched in big games for a successful program. He is extremely motivated to make the most of his last season and we look forward to helping him achieve his individual baseball goals while he completes his advanced degree program."

Career Notes: Set to compete final collegiate season as a graduate transfer in 2021 … pitched in 32 games with 26 starts on the mound for Columbia from 2017-19 … logged 130.2 innings with 123 strikeouts … has experience pitching in an NCAA Regional … a two-year weekend starter … credited with nine wins … set to earn degree from Columbia University as a psychology major … intends to enroll in Masters of Science in Supply Chain Management program at Rutgers University.
2019 (Junior): Started 10 games … named Honorable Mention All-Ivy League … went 4-3 with 4.18 ERA in 51.2 innings … pitched a career-high 7.2 innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts to earn win at Yale (4/14) … fanned seven over 5.2 innings at Princeton (4/7) … registered career-high 10 strikeouts and allowed four over six innings against Dartmouth (3/31) … struck out seven in 4.2 innings at Cal Poly (3/9).
2018 (Sophomore): Started 12 of the 13 games appeared and worked 61.0 innings … struck out a team-high 52 and also posted three wins … threw 4.2 innings in his only relief outing against FAU (6/2) at NCAA Gainesville Regional … worked five innings with five hits and one run (unearned) in a win against Cornell (5/13) … fanned seven in 7.1 innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits in a win against Harvard (3/31) … struck out six batters at USF over five innings (3/3).
2017 (Freshman): Made nine appearances with four starts … went 2-1 with 18 strikeouts in 18 innings … worked scoreless frame to earn win at Rutgers (4/26) … fanned three batters in three shutout innings at No. 4 St. John's (4/5) to earn the decision … struck out six batters in four innings in collegiate debut at No. 3 Florida (3/3).
High School: A second team all-state, first team All-Western New York, first team all-section in 2016… Perfect Game Northeast Regional All-High School Senior Honorable Mention member after senior year … reached state semifinals in 2015 … posted career record of 11-4 with a 1.12 WHIP and 145 strikeouts … a member of the Buffalo Braves showcase team from 2008-15 … also played high school basketball.
Personal: Son of Mark and Andrea Wereski … has two younger brothers, Nathan and Luke.
