ANN ARBOR, Mich. –
Evan Sleight connected for a three-run double in the first inning, but No. 17 Michigan (19-7) allowed just one run from there and took the lead in the eighth inning to claim game one of the series over Rutgers baseball (12-13), 6-4, Friday at Fisher Stadium. It was the Scarlet Knights' first game of the season against a ranked opponent.
Â
"We had a lot going and a lead early, but gave it back to them," head coach
Steve Owens said. "We walked too many guys with the lead. And we had key guys not do their job again by not delivering RBIs with runners on. There were chances to expand the lead. Harry hung in there and Kyle did a good job. Dale, I thought, threw the ball the best he has all year. They got some singles on him with two outs. There's a reason Michigan is ranked. They got the job done in key situations, and although we competed at a high level, we didn't. We have to be better if we want to win tomorrow."
Â
Coming off a six-RBI performance last Sunday, Sleight knocked in three on a bases-clearing double.
Danny DiGeorgio had two hits, including a solo homer, his fifth long ball of the season. Both
Mike Nyisztor and
Richie Schiekofer stole two bases.
Â
Harry Rutkowski left in a tie game with four runs allowed in five innings. The left-hander struck out five and now has 195 career punchouts.
Kyle Muller worked two scoreless innings before leaving an inherited runner in the eighth.
Dale Stanavich struck out two in his inning of work.
Â
Michigan scored five runs with two outs and struck out 14 on the mound. Willie Weiss earned the save.
- T1 | The Scarlet Knights jumped ahead early on Sleight's three-run, two-out double. Nyisztor started the game with a single, stole second and advanced to third on Schiekofer's sacrifice bunt that was thrown away for an error. Following a strikeout and walk drawn by Ryan Lasko to load the bases, another strikeout went for the second out, but Sleight lifted a double over the right fielder's head to drive in three.
- B2 | Michigan used two hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly to score two runs.
- T4 | DiGeorgio skied a solo homer to left to give RU a 4-2 lead.
- B4 | With two outs, a walk, stolen base, double and triple from the Wolverines tied the game at four.
- B8 | Riley Bertram and Jordon Rogers connected for back-to-back two-out RBI singles for the go-ahead runs.

Game two of the series is set for Saturday at noon, two hours earlier than originally scheduled due to rain in the forecast. Watch on Big Ten Network+ or listen on ScarletKnights.com.
