PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 12, 2022) – The No. 22 Rutgers baseball team set a new season-high in runs and won its 11
th consecutive game in a 23-3 blowout win over Lafayette on Tuesday afternoon at Bainton Field.
Â
The Scarlet Knights took advantage of 20 free passes (17 walks, 3 hit-by-pitches) and slugged three home runs to score 20+ runs for the third time this season and win by double-digit runs for the ninth time.
Â
"We didn't swing at balls and they threw a lot of balls today. We got some hits when we needed them," head coach
Steve Owens said of the win. "
Chris Brito's home run set the stage for the day.
Wyatt Parliament stayed out there, did a good job and threw more strikes. We played clean defense and everyone got a chance to get a couple of at-bats today."
Â
The visiting Leopards would get on the board first, with Kaleb Willis hitting his first-career home run in the top of the first inning to put Lafayette up 1-0.
Â
Rutgers had an immediate response, as the Leopards walked the bases loaded for red-hot
Chris Brito. He would hit a bullet to dead-center field for a grand slam to put RU ahead 4-1 and give the Scarlet Knights control of the game.
Â
RU would go on to score in the first seven innings of the game, including crooked numbers of 4 in the first, 4 in the second, 5 in the fifth and 6 in the sixth.
Â
Jordan Sweeney came off the bench and cranked two home runs in his three at-bats.
Â
"It's good to see Jordan with a couple home runs," Owens said. "He got some good swings off and the second one was really hit well."
Â
Wyatt Parliament got the start for the Scarlet Knights and for the second straight game he started, he went 5.0 innings and earned the win. For the day, Parliament threw 5.0 innings, allowing 2 runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out three and throwing 85 pitches to improve his record to 3-0.
Â
Mike Nyisztor,
Garrett Callaghan,
Nick Cimillo,
