PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 19, 2022) – The No. 8 Rutgers baseball team rode an 11-run second inning and more strong pitching to defeat Iona 19-1 for the program's 16th straight win, one win off tying the program record.Â
"There was some good stuff through the lineup," head coach
Steve Owens said. "We didn't really chase balls today. We got in good counts and we got a lot of hits early in the game."
Wyatt Parliament got the start for RU and had his best game of his young career. He tossed a career-high 5.2 innings, allowing just two hits and no runs, while striking out five Gaels and earning the win to improve to 4-0 on the season.Â
"His command was better again, he threw more strikes and he's continuing to progress and get better," Owens said of Parliament. "He was able to get out there into the sixth inning which was good progress for him."
Offensively,
Jordan Sweeney helped set the tone early, homering twice in the first three innings in addition to a first-inning RBI single. He finished 4-for-6 with 5 RBI.
Garrett Callaghan got the start in right field and delivered early, leading off the second with a triple. Later that same inning, Callaghan lofted a ball over the left field wall for his second home run of the season.Â
Chris Brito also had a strong game, finishing a home run short of the cycle and going 4-for-6 with a triple, double and 4 RBI.
Matt Rowe and
Jayson Hoopes closed out the game on the mound, combining for 3.1 innings of hitless ball with five strikeouts and an unearned run.
