Feb 26 | Baseball
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Rutgers baseball fell to Boston College by a score of 6-4 in the finale of the Swig and Swine Classic on Sunday afternoon.
While the Scarlet Knights (2-4) were able to jump out to a 2-1 lead in the second inning, the Eagles (5-1) were able to get ahead 3-2 in the third inning and would lead the rest of the way, securing the victory.
Jake Marshall got the start for Rutgers and pitched 3.0 innings, seeing one batter in the fourth. He allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on eight hits, two walks and struck out two. He was relieved by Grant Besser, who had a strong day for RU, going 2.2 innings, allowing 1 run on three hits, while striking out two and walking none.
Sam Portnoy pitched 1.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout, Sam Bello pitched the eighth inning, giving up 1 run, while Joe Mazza pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with a strikeout.
Rutgers got the scoring started in the bottom of the first on a bases-loaded walk by Chris Brito. Trevor Cohen singled and Jordan Sweeney doubled to start off the second, with Cohen scoring on an RBI groundout to give RU a 2-1 advantage.
The Eagles battled back to take a 4-2 lead, but Brito got the Scarlet Knights back in it with his first home run of the season -- a solo shot in the fifth -- to make it 4-3. BC was able to answer with runs in the sixth and eighth to keep RU from coming back.
Rutgers returns to action for its home opener on Tuesday at 3 p.m. against Saint Joseph's at Bainton Field.
