GREENSBORO, N.C. – Despite erasing a 9-5 deficit in the ninth inning, Rutgers baseball lost to UNC Greensboro by a score of 10-9 in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon, giving UNCG the series sweep.
Losing 9-7 and down to the team's final out,
Chris Brito launched a game-tying 2-run home run for the Scarlet Knights (3-7) to force extra innings. The Spartans (7-5), however, would win on a walk-off sac fly in the bottom of the 10th inning.
For the third straight game, RU jumped out to an early lead, going ahead 1-0 in the first inning. UNCG answered back to take a 2-1 lead and eventually extended its lead to 8-2 after four innings.
The Scarlet Knights slowly chipped away, with
Danny Melnick hitting a pair of run-scoring singles and
Jordan Sweeney hitting a sac fly to close the deficit to 9-5.
In the top of the ninth,
Hugh Pinkney led things off with a double into right center.
Trevor Cohen then hit a triple into the gap and would score when the throw to third went into the Rutgers dugout. After two quick outs,
Evan Sleight represented the final out of the game. He worked a full-count walk, setting the stage for Brito, who already had two doubles on the day.
Brito then hit a no-doubt home run to left field, tying the game at 9-9 and ultimately forcing extra innings.
In the 10th, Cam Love got to first with a leadoff single, but Pinkney and Cohen each flied out to the warning track and Love was picked off at first to end the half inning. The Spartans loaded the bases in the bottom half and won the game on a sac fly.
