PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball lost game two to Penn State by a score of 11-7 on Saturday night at Bainton Field.
The Scarlet Knights (25-26, 12-14) were unable to complete a comeback after the Nittany Lions (29-18, 15-14) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second.
After both teams were kept off the board in the first inning, Penn State exploded for seven runs in the second to take control. A two-run single and RBI fielder's choice plated the first three for the Nittany Lions. A ground-rule double made it 4-0 and a three-run homer broke it open to give the visitors a 7-0 advantage.
RU began to chip away in the second, getting on the board with a sac fly from JT Thompson. Two more crossed in the third on a solo homer from Ty Doucette and RBI single from Yomar Carreras, making it 7-3.
Penn State added one in the fourth on a single to take a five-run lead at 8-3.
Rutgers responded with four in the fourth to make it a one-run game. Trevor Cohen doubled in one, Peyton Bonds singled in two and Carreras hit an RBI groundout, making it 8-7.
In the top of the seventh, a solo home run from the Nittany Lions would push their advantage to 9-7. A two-run shot in the top of the ninth pushed it to 11-7, which would hold as the final.
The series between Rutgers and Penn State is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Bainton Field. The Scarlet Knights will honor their graduating seniors with a pregame ceremony.
