PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball lost its series opener to Penn State by a score of 7-5 on Friday night at Bainton Field.
The Scarlet Knights (25-25, 12-13) had a lead going into the seventh, but the Nittany Lions (28-18, 14-14) scored three in the seventh and two in ninth to earn the win.
PSU used a pair of sac flies in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth, RU loaded the bases and after working a full count, Yomar Carreras delivered a go-ahead grand slam to make it 4-2 – his third home run in the last two games.
In the top of the seventh, the Nittany Lions hit a solo home run to make it a one-run game. After getting two on with two out, a two-run single into center gave PSU a 5-4 advantage.
Matt Chatelle tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out single to make it 5-5.
Despite getting a pair on in the eighth, RU was unable to scratch anything across.
Penn State then took the late lead with a two-run double in the top of the ninth to jump ahead by a score of 7-5.
Despite getting the tying run on base in the ninth, the Scarlet Knights were unable to score to extend the game.
Game two between Rutgers and Penn State is set for 6 p.m. Saturday at Bainton Field.
