MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Rutgers baseball won 14-4 in dominant fashion over College of Charleston on Sunday, clinching the four-game series win at Patriots Point.
The Scarlet Knights (3-1) scored six in the first and continued to add on throughout the game to down the Cougars (1-3) and win three-of-four on opening weekend.
RU struck early with a huge first inning to take control of things early. A Trey Wells single, Tristan Salinas double and Yomar Carreras single each scored a run to make it 3-0. Quinten Perilli delivered the big blow of the inning – a three-run homer – to make it 6-0.
Charleston battled back, scoring three in the first and another in the second to tighten things up at 6-4.
Entering with one out and two runners on in the first inning, Zach Gleason got out of the inning with no further damage to preserve the 6-3 lead.
True freshman Chris Sand came in to start the third inning and was dominant in his first career action. He pitched three scoreless innings and earned the win, allowing just one hit and one walk with a strikeout, needing just 32 pitches.
Charlie Meglio gave Rutgers breathing room in the fourth when he launched a two-run home run to make it 8-4. Carreras followed with another RBI single and the Scarlet Knights began to pull away.
Jordan Savinon made his Rutgers debut in the sixth, pitching around traffic on the bases in his first inning of work before going on to throw 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
Peyton Bonds singled in a run in the seventh before Wells hit a solo home run in the eighth. Perilli singled in two more and Tyler Wiltsey scored from second on a fielder's choice to put Rutgers up by 10 and bring the run-rule into effect.
Tyler Kane came in with one out in the eighth and retired the last two batters to close out the victory.
Rutgers returns to action next weekend at Virginia Tech, with game one of the three-game series set for 6 p.m. Friday.
