PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball won its home opener over Stony Brook by a score of 5-1 on Wednesday at Bainton Field.
Wednesday's contest marked the first game at the new-and-improved Bainton Field, which now features new grandstand seating, a new press box and sound system.
What was a pitchers' duel for most of the night turned in the favor of RU thanks to a four-run eighth inning, as the Scarlet Knights (6-5) rallied to defeat the Seawolves (1-9).
The Scarlet Knights received strong pitching throughout to help propel the team on a night with cold and wet conditions.
Henry Radbill started for RU and pitched two scoreless innings, striking out a pair for his first two collegiate strikeouts.
A sac fly from Charlie Meglio in the bottom of the first gave the Scarlet Knights an early 1-0 lead. Stony Brook then evened things up with a two-out single in the third.
With the game tied at one after three, the Rutgers pitchers provided six straight scoreless innings to hold the Seawolves at bay.
Jordan Saviñon got things with scoreless fourth and fifth innings, striking out a pair and allowing just one hit. Zach Gleason struck out two in the fifth and then exited after the first two batters reached.
Andrew Rondini came in with two on and no outs, but after a sac bunt got a strikeout and fly out the end the frame.
After Rondini posted another zero in the eighth, the RU lineup went to work.
Quinten Perilli pinch hit to begin the frame and drew a walk to start the rally. Chase Krewson singled and went to third on an error by the outfielder, making it second and third with an out. Stony Brook opted to intentionally walk Charlie Meglio to load the bases.
A balk would score the go-ahead run and Trey Wells hit a deep fly ball to right field that dropped for a two-run triple. After Yomar Carreras hit an RBI single, it was 5-1.
Rondini remained in the game and threw a scoreless ninth to finish off the victory.
