Baseball Drops 14-Inning Marathon Against No. 1 UCLA

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball dropped a 14-inning thriller against No. 1 UCLA, falling by a score of 4-1 at Bainton Field.

The Scarlet Knights (17-16, 5-8) posted 10 straight scoreless innings on the mound, but the Bruins (31-2, 16-0) scored three in the top of the 14th to earn the win.

RU got stellar relief outings from Joe Mazza, Andrew Rondini and Jordan Saviñon, but the UCLA pitchers posted 13 straight scoreless innings of their own to hold the Scarlet Knights at bay.

In a 1-1 game, Mazza came in for the fourth and threw three scoreless innings, giving up three hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Rondini contributed 3.1 scoreless frames, yielding two hits with two strikeouts. Saviñon entered with one out in the tenth and got out of a jam, going on to pitch three scoreless and hitless innings with five strikeouts.

While RU got on the board first on an RBI single from Charlie Meglio in the first inning, that was the only offense on the night.

The Bruins tied it up at 1-1 on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the third before the teams combined to go scoreless for the next 10 frames.

In the top of the 14th, UCLA loaded the bases and took a 2-1 advantage on a fielder's choice. A two-run single added insurance to push the lead to 4-1.

The Scarlet Knights went down in order in the bottom half to end the contest after four hours and 50 minutes of game action.

Game two between Rutgers and UCLA is set for 3 p.m. Saturday at Bainton Field.
