CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Sophomore Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) crushed a two-run home run in the first inning, but Rutgers baseball dropped the second game of its series at No. 9 Miami, 9-5, Saturday at Alex Rodriguez Park. The Scarlet Knights and Hurricanes will meet again at 7 p.m. tonight to complete the day-night doubleheader.
Offensively, junior Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.) had a double and single, while Marcinczyk added a double and five putouts in the outfield to his long ball. RU had three sacrifice flies in the game.
Junior Mark McCoy (Barnegat, N.J.) (0-1) made his first start as a Scarlet Knight, but suffered the loss. In relief, sophomore Kevin Baxter (Waterford, N.J.) worked the final 4.1 innings with four strikeouts in the outing.
Marcinczyk jolted a 2-2 pitch over the wall in right field to put Rutgers up 2-0. The first inning started with a double by Suseck and a single by senior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.), but Suseck was cut down at the plate on a throw from the outfield. Marcinczyk followed with his two-run shot to give the Scarlet Knights an early lead.
McCoy tossed a scoreless first with one strikeout, but Miami broke through for three in the second on a two-out, three-run double by Zack Collins. UM added one in the second and three in the fourth to expand their lead to 7-2.
The Scarlet Knights chipped into the deficit with one run in the fifth. Sophomore Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) and Suseck both reached via error to put two in scoring position, with Zarrillo next lifting a sacrifice fly for an RBI. However, the Hurricanes responded with two in the bottom of the sixth to expand to a 9-3 advantage. Sophomore Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.) and junior John Jennings (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) each added sacrifice flies in the eighth and ninth to make the final, 9-5.
Thomas Woodrey (1-0) earned the win for the Hurricanes, while Ryan Otero was credited with the save.
Sophomore Kyle Driscoll (Toms River, N.J.) will make the start in the nightcap against Miami.
