TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Rutgers baseball fought back to even the score in the sixth, but Central Michigan scored seven unanswered runs to win 9-2 in the nightcap of a doubleheader Saturday at Bob Warn Field. The game was part of the Indiana State tournament.
After the Chippewas (13-6) took advantage of a fluke play to score two unearned runs in the first, junior Mark McCoy (Barnegat, N.J.) settled in on the mound to allow RU (2-11) to tie it in the sixth. Freshman Kyle Walker (Piscataway, N.J.) connected for a leadoff double in the third and eventually scored with two outs on a failed pickoff attempt for the first run. Then in the sixth, senior Joe D'Annunzio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) tripled with two down and came across immediately on an RBI single to center by sophomore Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.).
However, CMU scored one in the bottom of the sixth and used four walks and a hit by pitch to add five more in the seventh to take control.
McCoy (0-3) took the loss despite permitting just one earned run over six innings. The left-hander struck out three and picked off a runner at first. Jason Gamble (2-1) picked up the win for Central Michigan with 6.1 frames of work on the mound.
Walker, who started at designated hitter, added a single to his night to collect his first collegiate multiple-hit game. Sophomore Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.) also reached bases twice with a single and a walk.
The Scarlet Knights will look to get back in the win column Sunday with a 2 p.m. game against Indiana State. Sophomore Kyle Driscoll (Toms River, N.J.) will take the hill for RU.
