BOCA RATON, Fla. - Rutgers baseball fell 10-3 at No. 24 Florida Atlantic Saturday at FAU Baseball Stadium. It was the second game of a three-game series.
Junior Mark McCoy (Barnegat, N.J.) (0-2) made his third start on the mound for the Scarlet Knights and allowed three earned runs over 5.2 innings. The left-hander struck out three in the outing. Sophomore Colin Bohnert (West Caldwell, N.J.) logged two innings of relief.
Drew Jackson (3-0) earned the win for the Owls (13-2) with one earned permitted over six innings. Rutgers (1-8) totaled three hits in the ballgame.
Down 2-0 in the sixth, RU chipped back to make it a one-run game. Sophomore Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) was hit by a pitch and senior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) and sophomore Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) both walked to load the bases with two outs. A wild pitch then allowed Rosa to come across.
After FAU tacked on two in the next half inning, the Scarlet Knights battled back in the seventh to bring it to a 4-3 game. Senior Joe D'Annunzio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) led off with a single through the left side, moved up on a sacrifice bunt and eventually scored on a wild throw. Sophomore TJ Perkowski (South Brunswick, N.J.) also scored an unearned run.
However, Florida Atlantic responded with six runs in seventh to expand their lead.
Sophomore Kyle Driscoll (Toms River, N.J.) will make the start in the series finale set for Sunday at noon. The right-hander did not allow a run in four innings versus Old Dominion.
