BRIDGEWATER, N.J. -- Rutgers baseball dropped the finale of its series with Seton Hall, 16-5, Sunday in a neutral-site game played at TD Bank Ballpark, home of the Somerset Patriots. The Scarlet Knights had previously won 3-2 Friday and 4-2 Saturday to clinch the weekend set.
Freshman Milo Freeman (Millburn, N.J.) led RU offensively by reaching base in all four plate appearances, including his first career home run in the second inning. Senior Joe D'Annunzio (Scotch Plains, N.J.), sophomore Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) and junior Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.) also contributed two-hit games, as Rutgers totaled 11 overall. For D'Annunzio, he connected for his seventh triple, tied for second in a season in school history, and 14th of his career, third-most in the program record book.
After RU (15-27-1) stranded two in the top of the first, SHU (20-17) connected for four hits and scored four runs to take the early lead.
However, the Scarlet Knights responded with three of their own in the second inning to make it a one-run game. Freeman connected for a solo home run to start, lining a shot over the wall in left. Junior R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.) continued with a walk and then stole second with two outs with senior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) at the plate. Zarrillo took advantage of the situation and hit a two-out RBI single through the right side. Next up, D'Annunzio crushed a deep triple to the wall in center.
Seton Hall would answer with one in the second and two more in the third to reclaim a four-run lead at 7-3. The Scarlet Knights chipped back with one in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.). Suseck and Freeman had previously singled and Devish was struck by a pitch to load the bases.
That would prove to be the final runs for Rutgers until the ninth, as Seton Hall would break open the game with nine more. In the last inning, Marcinczyk singled and sophomore Chris Folinusz (Cranford, N.J.) walked to put two on. Sophomore Sean Feeney (Cranford, N.J.) then lined a pinch-hit single to right for his first career RBI.
Sophomore Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) (1-5) took the loss on the mound, with five pitchers following in relief. Both freshman Ryan Wares (Howell, N.J.) and junior Reed Shuttle (Lansdale, Pa.) logged scoreless outings.
The Pirates totaled 17 hits on the day with Tyler Boyd leading all players with four hits and six RBIs. Anthony Elia (2-1) provided five innings out of the bullpen to earn the win.
The Scarlet Knights will next play at Villanova Wednesday at 3 p.m., as the game versus Fairleigh Dickinson will not take place Tuesday at Bainton Field. The team will travel to Penn State for its next weekend series.
