PRINCETON, N.J. – An in-state rivalry series was contested for the 99
th time on Friday night. In front of a strong crowd of 1,440 New Jersey lacrosse fans, No. 7 Princeton defeated No. 3 Rutgers 16-11.
Rutgers was led by three goals from
Mitch Bartolo and two goals apiece from
Brian Cameron and
Michael Sanguinetti. The Scarlet Knights had the advantage in shots (58-46) but Princeton made 21 saves and led in faceoffs (19-12) and ground balls (36-31).
The first quarter went back-and-forth.
Brian Cameron scored the first two goals for the Scarlet Knights, and after goals from
Eric Civetti and
Michael Sanguinetti, the game saw ties at 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4. The Tigers got a goal with 2.1 seconds left in the first quarter and led 5-4 after 15 minutes.
Goals from
Mitch Bartolo and
Nick Teresky put RU ahead at 6-5, but Princeton answered back with three goals to take their first two goal advantage of the day at 8-6.
Bartolo got one back for RU, muscling his way to goal. But Princeton closed out the first half with a flurry, taking an 11-7 lead at halftime.
Defenses controlled the play in the third quarter, as RU regrouped at halftime and played sound in the third frame.
Michael Sanguinetti scored the only goal in the third quarter, and after a 1-0 quarter, Princeton took an 11-8 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Tigers extended their lead to 12-8 with their first goal of the second half, snapping a 17-minute scoring drought.
Ronan Jacoby answered with his first goal of the day.
The home team once again recaptured the momentum with four straight goals, taking command of the game.
Ross Scott and
Mitch Bartolo had late goals, but Princeton was able to close out the victory.

- The game was the 99th meeting between the two programs, the longest played series in Rutgers program history.
- Rutgers wore "Tom Hayes" nameplates in memory of their former head coach who passed away on Monday.
- Mitch Bartolo had his fourth game at Rutgers with at least three goals
- Nick Teresky had his first career assist and a career-high three points (one goal, two assists).
- Michael Sanguinetti tied his career-high in goals (two) with his fifth career multi-goal game.
- Ethan Rall, who had six ground balls and three caused turnovers, has a new career-high with 16 caused turnovers on the season.
- Rall (6 GB) and Brian Cameron (4 GB) tied career-highs.
- Bryant Boswell made his first start at Rutgers on defense
