No. 22 Baseball Beats Penn for 12th Straight Win

Scarlet Knights use another complete effort to down Quakers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 13, 2022) – The No. 22 Rutgers baseball team took care of business against Penn on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Quakers 8-4 for its 12th straight win.

Penn came into the game with a top-40 RPI and has the best overall record in the IVY League. The Quakers led the conference in several categories, including batting average, ERA, runs per game and OPS.

Two Penn players in Jackson Appel (.409) and Wyatt Henseler (.402) entered the week hitting above .400 on the season.

The Scarlet Knights took used timely hitting from the like of Chris Brito and Jordan Sweeney, while the pitching staff kept one of the best offenses in the northeast in check.

Playing their second straight midweek game, the big names from Tuesday's win over Lafayette once again showed up for the Scarlet Knights.

Chris Brito got RU on the board in the second inning, placing a single into right field to score Danny DiGeorgio.

Jordan Sweeney continued to hit the ball well, singling through the left side to double the lead.

"Jordan had a good day driving runs in," head coach Steve Owens said. "He had a very good approach the whole day and got some big hits for us with guys on base."

Brito and Sweeney would each have another RBI single apiece, while Richie Schiekofer had an RBI triple and Josh Kuroda-Grauder had an RBI single of his own to pace the offense.

On the mound, Kyle Muller got the start and gave his team a strong effort, going 4.1 innings and allowing 2 runs. He would strike out two and walk none.

Nate McLain entered for Joe Mazza in the fifth to clean things up after Penn inched back to a 6-4 deficit, promptly getting a popout to end the frame. McLain then tossed a scoreless sixth inning to lock up his first collegiate win.

Garrett French (7th), Sam Bello (8th) and Ben Gorski (9th) each threw a scoreless inning of relief to lock up the victory.

"Penn is a really good hitting team, maybe the best hitting team that we've faced this year," Owens said. "They're physical, they have a lot of left-handed hitters, they swing it well and have a really good approach. Our pitchers did a really good job today."
