PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's lacrosse is back on action on Tuesday, with the team's lone midweek game of the season in a 3 pm contest. Rutgers brings a 3-1 record into the meeting against 3-0 LIU. The game will be live streamed on B1G+, with Dom Savino and Rick Mercurio on the call.
Rutgers has opened the year with a 3-1 mark, having won two straight games. The Scarlet Knights possess a home win (versus Villanova on Saturday, 8-7 inside SHI Stadium), a true road win (over Stony Brook) and a neutral site win (Jacksonville, overtime in Naples, Florida). RU also lost to No. 12 Army in a home game that was moved indoors inside the Busch Practice Bubble, and as such has played four games in four different locations, with the LIU game slated to be the first repeat location.
Last time out, the Scarlet Knights claimed their first victory over Villanova since 1997 with an 8-7 victory over the Wildcats. The win was the 175 of the collegiate head coaching career of Brian Brecht, and the 110th at the helm of the Scarlet Knights. In the contest, Rutgers led 7-6 heading into halftime, and saw defenses take over in the second half for the 8-7 final.
Greyson Vorgang had four goals and an assist, with a career-high in goals and points. Vorgang, a redshirt sophomore who scored four goals in 11 goals last season in his first year as a Scarlet Knight, matched his output from last seson in the single game, and has put home nine goals over the past three games.
Goalkeeper Cardin Stoller made 14 saves, had five ground balls and allowed just one goal over the final 42 minutes of game time. Connor Udovich led the defense with three caused turnovers.
LIU was picked to finish second in the NEC in the Preseason Poll, receiving two of the eight first place votes under fourth-year head coach Jordan Levine. LIU returns five all-conference players from last season, including First Team All-NEC pick Aidan Zuhoski, who scored 23 goals a year ago. Cameron Connolly, Tyler Davide, Ryan Fountain and Ben McIsaac were all Second Team All-NEC.
LIU is 3-0 on the year. The Sharks have defeated Mount St. Mary's (14-12), Monmouth (9-8) and Iona (16-10). Ben McIsaac led LIU with six points in the win over the Gales (3 goals, 3 assists). He leads the team on the year with seven goals and 10 points. Goalkeeper Tyler Gresh has a .559 save percentage on the year.
Last season, LIU went 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the NEC. The Sharks were eliminated in the NEC Semifinals in overtime by Robert Morris.
Rutgers and LIU have met twice before, both RU wins, by an average margin of victory of 10.5 goals. Last season, RU earned a 17-3 win in the home opener, with 12 different goal scorers, and five different players with two goals, four of whom are on the active roster currently (JJ Aiello, Kasey Mongillo, Colin Kurdyla and Bennett Raphalian).
In 2022, the Scarlet Knights opened up that season with a 15-6 victory over the Sharks, with Mitch Bartolo leading RU with five goals in the game. The Scarlet Knights put up 15 goals on then-LIU goalkeeper Will Mark, who went on to be an All-American at Syracuse and a PLL goalkeeper.
Rutgers completes its three-game homestand on Saturday, hosting Hofstra. That game is youth lacrosse day, with kids wearing a jersey getting in free and a helmet sticker and schedule poster giveaway.
